Nos trasladamos esta vez a nuestras antípodas, es decir a Australia, para presentar a Rene Geyer. Sirva de muestra este Lp "Moving along" grabado en 1977, que incluye esta versión del "Be there in the morning" de Norman Connors, a mi me gusta más que la original. Rene Geyer tiene una larga trayectoria que comenzó en lo años 70, siendo en su país una de las cantantes más respetadas. Espero que hayáis tenido un buen verano y el tema os guste ... un saludo.

Como quiere que Madrid, por mucho que sea una ciudad que me encanta, en verano se convierte en una ciudad demasiado calurosa. Hago las maletas, musicales y las otras, y marcho al norte. Aprovecharé para visitar a gente a la que quiero un montón y contribuiré a que las dos propuestas que hoy os muestro tengan mi visión personal desde las cabinas.

En esta ocasión nos trasladamos a un escenario diferente. Al bajar del avión eres recibido con collares de flores, sonrisas y camisas de exultante colorido. Por delante quedan días de playa, sol, decoración "tiki" y bebidas humeantes ¿por que no? ...la banda sonora la interpreta un artista local, Macky Feary acompañado de su banda. Estas en Honolulu, Hawai y suena esta delicia: "A million stars" incluida en "Macky feary band". Una buena banda sonora para comenzar unas vacaciones o terminarlas..... ¡Feliz verano!

La historia de la música afroamericana esta plagada de grandes pequeños temas, el que os presento hoy es otro de ellos.
"Morning Spring" de Copeland Davis Group, se grabo en Washington D.C. en un pequeño sello local, "Regalia", por una banda que como viene siendo habitual no dejo ningún otro rastro musical. Sugiero que sin el antecedente musical del gran Marvin Gaye este "Morning Spring" no se hubiera tan siquiera gestado, pues estilísticamente tiene muchas similitudes con el gran Marvin. La prueba esta ahí.... toda una declaración de amor. Si, otra vez, ese maravilloso sentimiento, espero que lo disfrutéis.

Haciendo limpia hoy ha aparecido esto que os muestro: un cupón de respuesta postal internacional.
Ahora con la inmediatez de internet y la búsqueda de información en la red tan accesible, quizás ya no tenga ninguna utilidad, pero hace un tiempo no tan lejano si que la tuvo. Recuerdo comprarlos por tandas en la oficina de correos, de cinco en cinco e incluso de diez en diez, para después adjuntarlas a cartas destinadas a tiendas de discos la mayoría de USA, otras a Europa y alguna se dejo caer por Asia, es decir Japón, e incluso Australia.
¿Cual era su función? Que el destinatario pudiera canjearlo en su oficina de correos por un franqueo gratuito, así te asegurabas que te respondieran sin coste para ellos. Muchos se quedaron en el camino, sin respuesta vaya, bien por vagueria del receptor o vaya usted a saber que.... Pero otras cumplían su objetivo y tras un periodo de espera, en ocasiones largo, llegaba a tu buzón una carta cargada de información musical, que en algunas ocasiones se plasmaban después en buenas compras.
Vaya para este antaño valioso instrumento, el merecido homenaje que merece.

En 1974, el gran Barry White concedía la oportunidad, dentro del paraguas de su impecable producción, a esta desconocida Gloria Scott. El disco su único Lp grabado, es impresionante de principio a fin, plagado de sentimiento Soul y una autentica delícia para cualquier amante del genero. El resto de su carrera musical se limitó a poco: una producción de Sly Stone con el grupo The Tonettes a mediados de los años 60 y alguna colaboración como corista en discos de otros artistas. Me viene a la cabeza un disco de Bob Diddley, una pena...
"(A case of) Too much lovemakin´" es una de mis canciones preferidas de todos los tiempos.... ¡ ahí queda eso!

Esta es la portada de un ejemplar de la revista americana "Architectural Record". Cada vez que consigo una de ellas me alegra el día. Los números de los años 60 y 70 encierran en sus paginas, contenidos gráficos muy interesantes. Abro hoy esta particular caja de Pandora, la de las revistas.

Vuelve Ian Wright (Sisterfunk/Deepfunk-Uk) , uno de mis dj preferidos y de los mejores disjockey de soul/funk del mundo.
Aqui os dejo el comentario anterior que ya realice en mayo del año pasado, en aquella ocasión su sesión no dejo indiferentes a los que tuvimos la oportunidad de escucharle. Vuelve para hacernos pasar un buen rato y presentar su esperada segunda entrega de la serie sister funk: "Sisterfunk 2/The sounds of the unknow soul sisters", que ha editado en el sello Jazzman.

Una noche, un amigo me preguntó ¿de que color eran mis sueños?, le respondí que lo desconocía, que era algo que no parecía tener importancia, que lo verdaderamente importante era la música que sonaba en ellos.
Dentro de la historia de la música Soul hay un abanico extenso de artistas que no han pasado a ser conocidos por un público mayoritario y ese precisamente es el caso del artista que os presento, Willie Hutch. Su periodo productivo más destacable lo realizo dentro de la discografica negra más notable y conocida de USA: Tamla Motown Records. En la compañia tuvo un papel singular como letrista, productor y arreglista en la segunda etapa que la discográfica vivió al comenzar la década de los 70´s. Posteriormente volvería a colaborar con ellos en los 80 y parte de los 90. "I can sho´give you love" esta incluido en su Lp "Havin a house party", grabado en 1977 y que ocupa el quinto puesto de un total de seis que grabo en esa primera etapa. Toda su discográfica es altamente recomendable, pero este "I can sho´give you love" tiene algo especial y ademas se acerca bastante a lo que me agrada oír en sueños, espero que os guste.

Volver a casa después de un viaje, siempre va acompañado de una gran dosis de melancolía,
en la ventanilla del coche se entremezclan visiones en tiempo real y recuerdos fugaces del fin de semana.
Delante de la vista pasan, postes telegráficos a toda velocidad, vistas y sitios que posiblemente no visitaras nunca o quizás si. Pero a ratos, la mente se abstrae y toman la iniciativa retazos de lo vivido unas horas antes y entonces una sonrisa te invade el rostro. ¿Como explicar la energía que te trasmite la gente que quieres,
las canciones que amas o los momentos que vives? Después de un fin de semana como el vivido en Bilbao,
recuperas fuerzas que dabas por perdidas, o simplemente, estaban aletargadas en algún rincón de tu anatomía.

Adjunto nota de la edición de invierno del SOUL4REAL bilbaíno, una cita que las dos veces al año que se realiza procuro no perderme, en esta edición figuro como dj invitado:

Hace unos cuantos meses os hablé de la visita de Ian Wright, anuncié su sesión y conte parte de lo que hace en el mundo de la música. Hoy le toca el turno a Mark Taylor, la razón no es otra que su visita a Madrid para compartir su música con nosotros. Mark es uno de los dj´s más constantes de la escena de club británica, desde sus comienzos a mediados de los 80 , con el jazz, el soul y los ritmos brasileños como compañeros de viaje.
Durante este periodo sus sesiones han sido disfrutadas por todas las personas que se han acercado a escucharlas. Dj con extenso curriculum del que destacare sus sesiones en el "Jazz café" londinense, ese club en el centro de Londres que nos encandila con su programación, tanto como para considerar casi una obligación echar un vistazo previo de su oferta a todos los que visitamos la capital británica. Pero ademas ha pinchado en las famosas "Jazz Room" de Brighton, club consagrado al jazz de baile y también ha sido residente en las sesiones "Brazilian Love Affair" en Londres, junto a Patrice Force, uno de los primeros dj de la escena acid jazz. De esta interrelacion con los ritmos brasileños surgió que el sello "Blue Note" le encargara la realización de la tercera entrega de la serie "Blue Brazil".
También es miembro del colectivo Dig Family, con los que tiene una lista en la revista "Straight no Chaser" desde casi los inicios de esta.
En la actualidad su emisión mensual de radio "Happy Jazz" junto con Adrian Leach, se emite en una docena de emisoras de radio en todo el mundo a través de internet. Pues el 15 de diciembre visita Soulfood para hacernos pasar una noche que no olvidaremos... ¿tiene o no buena pinta?

El Jazz es una de mis pasiones, hoy os presento al saxofonista Vince Andrews, un hombre que tiene a gala ser uno de los músicos de sesión más demandados de los USA. En la década de los 80 grabo este pedazo de álbum en el sello independiente Gerald de Ohio. El disco que no tiene desperdicio, incluye este "The One who loves you", con la vocalista Jeanette Williams y el resto de su banda: Bobby Floyd a los teclados y el batería Matt Wagner. La primera vez que escuche este tema me fascino, me gusta su principio, el desarrollo vocal y la progresión ascendente de su parte instrumental. Intuyo que estuvo escondido durante mucho tiempo en cubetas de vinilos, hasta que alguien reparo en el ... ¡disfrutarlo!

Invierno de 1978. Dinamarca, Copenhagen como viene en la contraportada. Un disco fruto de la diáspora, gente que vivía en ese país aquellos años, con contribución de músicos locales. Tremendo plantel de músicos: Debbie Cameron, recién llegada de su Miami natal, Richard Boone que tambien recayó por Dinamarca en ese tiempo después de abandonar la banda de Count Basie en Estados Unidos. Juntan sus talentos con el pianista Kenny Drew, artífice de la idea, que no necesita presentación, Sabu Martínez a la percusión y Sahib Shihab en los vientos. A ver que os parece este "Stop foolin´yourself"..... una delicia.

The Soul Messengers- Cbs Israel Lp

Uno de los discos más curiosos que han caído en mis manos. En 1975 la compañía Columbia Israel publicaba este lp de los Soul Messengers, el grupo, formado por emigrantes etíopes, es una formación de soul gospel en linea con proyectos similares como Voices of East Harlem en USA. Nueve de las once canciones que componen el disco, todas con fuerte mensaje espiritual, son originarias del grupo, las otras dos restantes son versiones del catalogo de Stax records "Nineety-nine and a half (won´t do) de Wilson Pickett y Steve Crooper y "Let it be me", que aunque no se trate de un tema originario de la escudería, si fue interpretado por Sam & Dave y más artistas del sello de Memphis.El disco entero no tiene desperdicio y otro dato interesante, todos los temas exceptuando "Let it be me" están grabados en directo. Os dejo "You can make it" que es la que a mi más me gusta, disfrutarla.....

Mi portada preferida

La gente de Serie B, hace un tiempo me encargaron que eligiera de entre todos los discos de mi colección mi portada preferida. Y ahí estaba yo, como un niño al que preguntan por la eterna pregunta sobre la preferencia por uno de sus progenitores, pero elevado a la enésima potencia. He de confesar que no se planteo como un dilema, desde siempre he tenido predilección por la carpeta elegida: "A caddy for daddy" de Hank Mobley para el sello Bluenote.
¿Razones? No sabría decirlas, me gusta y punto...bueno o no, en la revista lo explico.
Ademas de lo anecdótico de mi contribución, la revista es altamente recomendable, tiene interesantes contenidos relacionados con gente más cercana al grafitti, el hip-hop y otros estilos colaterales.

Trumains- Ripe for the pickin - Rca 45

Este es un tema que llevaba tiempo queriendo colgar. The Trumains, el grupo en cuestión tiene otros 45 en varias discográficas incluidas Rca y Vigor. "Ripe for the pickin´" es posiblemente su tema más difícil de conseguir, lo grabaron en 1977 y es un tipo de sonido que me gusta mucho, con esas voces y esos arreglos.

Hoy es un día extraño, tan extraño, que es de esos días en los que parece que el tiempo y la circunstancia se ríe de uno. He tenido una experiencia gratificante, un encuentro casual en la calle con una persona que no veía hace la friolera de diez años. El primer sentimiento de alegría se ha tornado en desasosiego y rabia....... ese encuentro casual traía anexo una noticia que no estaba preparado para escuchar..... la perdida de un buen amigo. La vida, aplicando filosofía barata fruto de la resignación por la noticia ya del todo punto irremediable, en ocasiones te da mazazos como este.
Juanma, para algunos el discjockey del Anvick un antiguo soulbar en Huertas, zona de copas de Madrid, para otros compañero de tardes de fútbol, conciertos, sesiones, "potos" como le gustaba llamarlos, compañero del curro, compañero de vida.....se ha ido.
Hace tiempo que no tenia una sensación tan extraña.............de rabia.
Juanma amigo, sigue sabiendo estar allí donde estés, sigue dando sin pedir nada, sigue en nuestra memoria.....amigo.
Hace tiempo leí en algún sitio, refiriendose a un ser querido que dejaba a su gente, algo que me voy a permitir usar ahora......

Este pasado fin de semana asistí a una experiencia francamente novedosa, en una casa rural en plena campiña vizcaína nos juntamos un buen numero de fans del Soul para celebrar una nueva edición del Soul4real. Poets of Rhythm live!

El pasado jueves puse unos temas después del concierto de Poets of Rhythm, banda alemana que lleva muchos años a sus espaldas.Tocaron en La boca del lobo,un local emblemático de la noche madrileña y tengo que decir que me sorprendieron gratamente.La formación estaba compuesta por siete músicos, incluyendo varios percusionistas, xilófono y flauta travesera y es destacable lo novedoso de la propuesta.Leo en algún sitio que la formación actual incluye aparte de miembros de la banda seminal a gente de Heliocentrics y Soul Destroyers. Sus influencias en la actualidad van desde los ritmos africanos al cine surrealista?. La banda en un principio se formo como un combo de funk y desde entonces han gozado de un respeto inusual. En esta ocasión la propuesta tenia un carácter diferente, venían acompañados de la cantante Bajka y demostraron un perfecto ejercicio estilístico de funk y soul, pero ademas mezclando jazz con ritmos africanos, bandas sonoras e incluso folk.
