Kenny Rankin - Silver Morning - Little David Lp

Kenny Rankin- In the name if love

Coincidencia de fechas: publico en la entrada anterior una foto de Ben Sidran y ese mismo día me llega la noticia de la muerte de Kenny Rankin, otro artista blanco. Vaya para él este pequeño homenaje.
Kenny Rankin nació en Nueva York en 1940 y tuvo a lo largo de su vida una dilatada carrera como letrista y compositor . "In the name of love", la canción que os muestro, fue grabada años antes por la cantante Peggy Lee en un disco del mismo título. El tema, en la versión del propio Kenny, se publicó en 1975 en el Lp "Silver Morning", álbum quinto en su carrera de un total de trece que componen su discografía, comenzada en 1967 con el Lp "Mind Duster". A lo largo de su vida colaboró también como músico con otros artistas. La más recordada de ellas fue para Bob Dylan en su Lp Bringing it all back home en 1965.
La canción, muy del estilo de las entradas anteriores de Jon Lucien, Arthur Adams o Geoffrey Stoner, me gusta mucho .... a ver que os parece.

Soul4real 16 Soul Essence Special 12/13/14 Noviembre 09

Os dejo el cartel del Soul4real, uno de mis eventos Soul preferidos del calendario anual. En esta proxima edición figuro como invitado, se celebra en noviembre, los dias 12, 13 y 14. Aviso con tiempo, para que hagais un hueco en las agendas, merece mucho la pena. Ya hace años en este blog y en una entrada anterior , explique lo que significa para mi esta cita. ¡Que tengais buen dia!.

Banda macho-Mis ojos te adoraban- Sultana Mejico Lp

Durante la década de los 70, al igual que en el resto del mundo, Méjico tuvo bandas que versionearon temas clásicos de Soul. La que hoy os presento, Banda Macho, capitaneada por el organista Virginio Canales, era originaria de Monterrey, en Nuevo Leon. Se formo en 1971, en los comienzos se llamaban Macho y editarón un par de sencillos con temas propios. En 1974 toman el nombre de Banda Macho y su repertorio pasa a formarse únicamente de versiones. Grabaron cinco discos, cuatro en el sello Sultana y el último, en 1976, en la discografica Embassy. Este Lp "Mis ojos te adoraban" y dedicado casi al completo a revisar temas negroides, incluye esta curiosa versión del tema "Party down" del artista americano Little Beaver, que ellos titularon "Cada quien por igual"..... ¡ toma ya!

Otro año más, y ya van unos cuantos, volveré como dj al Soul Supreme, la fiesta organizada por Luis Beltza con motivo del 19 aniversario de su tienda Beltza Records. El Soul Supreme ha ido evolucionando para consolidarse en el enclave actual, este es el segundo año, la espectacular Sala Klub del Teatro Victoria Eugenia en Donostia/San Sebastian.

Rivage - Sittin´on it - Tempus Lp

Rivage- Strung out on your love

Tras la entrada anterior del disco de Pratt & McClain, en la que señalaba "el disco que por su portada podría pasar incluso desapercibido " y al hilo de las carpetas sin pistas, no podía faltar uno de los discos más curiosos en ese sentido de los que he tenido la suerte de encontrar. En 1981 en la pequeña discográfica Tempus de Florida en los U.S.A. el grupo Rivage editó el LP "Sittin´on it" que incluía en su portada una mariposa saliendo de una oreja y la leyenda "Cuando cantan Rivage la gente escucha, escucha y... escucha". Como podéis imaginar nada en el exterior del disco hace suponer que se trate de un grupo de música negra, en el interior se incluía un impagable poster, que reproduzco también y que seguramente hizo las delicias de las posibles admiradoras. Sobre el grupo poco más os puedo contar. El disco, en la actualidad muy buscado, incluye dos tremendos temas, el que os incluyo "Strung out on your love" editado en su día también en formato 45 y el fantástico "I need your baby", en una linea más relajada.

Pratt & McClain- Prat & McClain- Reprise Lp

Pratt & McClain- Wachersign

En 1976 el dúo formado por los vocalistas True Pratt & Jerry McClain, junto con el grupo Brotherlove, editaba un LP homónimo para el sello Reprise que vio la luz al abrigo de un tema grabado por ellos para un programa de la televisión americana llamado "Happy days". El disco que por su portada pudiera incluso pasar desapercibido, incluye este tema que os presento "Wachersign", una agradable sorpresa.
De la repercusión del Lp no tengo datos, lo que sí está claro es que la gente de Reprise vio el potencial de "Wachersign" apostando por él como tema estrella del disco. Se editó en formato maxisingle 12" y single 45, este último imposible de conseguir en nuestros días. ¡Disfrutadlo !

Una de las razones por las que me acerque a la música Soul es el uso en ella de las armonías vocales. Los grupos en ese aspecto juegan un papel fundamental, buena prueba de ello es el tema que hoy os presento y por extensión el grupo del mismo nombre "The lost generation". Formados por Lowrell Simon, su hermano Fred Simon, Larry Brownlee y Jesse Dean en 1969, estuvieron juntos cinco años, pero no cuentan con demasiada discografia: dos Lps "The Sly, Slick and Wicked" este "The lost generation" grabados en la discografica Brunswick a principios de los 70 y un single editado en 1974 llamado "Your mission (should you decide to accept it)" en el sello Innovation. Solo por este tema merece la pena fijarse en ellos, tremendo....

Lo pasé en grande, que se repita.

Jon Lucien- Rashida- Rca Lp

Tras las últimas entradas de Geoffrey Stoner y Arthur Adams, se me ocurrió que era obligado presentaros "Rashida". Un disco que tuve la suerte de encontrar en Madrid hace ya unos años, los mismos que ocupa en un lugar preferente de mi colección. Jon Lucien lo grabó en 1972 y es el segundo de su carrera, su predecesor se llamó "I am now" un compendio de versiones de temas de películas interpretadas por él y editado en la misma discografica RCA. "Rashida" le sirvió para demostrar su capacidad artística al firmar por primera vez como autor y arreglista todos los temas. "Un viaje musical al mundo de las islas" como se lee en las notas de la contraportada, descripción que suscribo plenamente. Su personal timbre, su cálida forma de cantar, la ayuda en el toque final de la producción de Dave Gruisin y hasta un total de 41 músicos que intervienen en el disco consiguen crear un sonido envolvente de climas musicales evocadores del Caribe natal de Jon, nacido en la Isla de Tortola en la West Indies británicas.He escogido "Would you believe in me " por ser el corte que más suelo pinchar, pero el disco entero es precioso. Hasta su muerte en agosto del pasado 2007, grabó una docena de Lps, pero es practicamente desconocido para el gran público.

Hay discos que marcan un antes y un después de su escucha, el que os presento hoy es uno de ellos.

"Existen muchos "Ike Whites" en este mundo- vamos a darles una oportunidad- para que el color de su piel no haga que su destino final sea estar entre rejas".... Estas lineas firmadas por el mismisimo Stevie Wonder dan una idea de este interesante disco.
Año 1976, la discografica LA radicada en la zona de Los Angeles, California, saca a la luz un álbum de un artista llamado Ike White, recluso de la cárcel de Tehachapi, una pequeña localidad del interior del estado. Este dato se adivina por los agradecimientos en la carátula del disco al superintendente Jerry Emoto del Departamento de Correcionales de California y al resto del personal de la prisión "sin cuya ayuda este proyecto no podría haberse realizado" .... y ningún dato más sobre Ike White, nada. El disco, aparte del excepcional "Changin times" que da titulo al Lp, incluye otro par de temas destacables, por lo que se hace muy recomendable su compra. La producción corrió a cargo de Jerry Goldstein, habitual productor de otros artistas del sello y quizás más conocido por su labor con el grupo War , famosos por su colaboración con Eric Burdon .

Arthur Adams - It´s private tonight- Blue Thumb Lp

Es pura lógica que el guitarrista Arthur Adams, músico de sesión y de directo, colaborador habitual de gente como Nina Simone, B.B King, James Brown, Crusaders, Jimmy Smith, Jerry Garcia, Al Jarreau y muchos más... decidiera en un momento de su carrera, probar suerte y lanzarse a la loable tarea de grabar sus propios discos.
El primero de ellos es este "It´s private tonight" que grabó en 1972 y para el que se rodeo de músicos excepcionales: Phil Upchurch a la otra guitarra, Wilton Felder al bajo, Joe Sample en los teclados, Paul Humphrey a la batería y Dave Blumberg a los vientos y cuerdas. Un álbum completo en conjunto que incluye este "I can´t believe my eyes" firmado como el resto de los temas del disco por el propio Arthur. Posteriormente en la misma década vendrían otros lps : "Midnight Serenade" en el sello Fantasy en 1977, "I love, love, love love my lady" grabado en 1979 para A&M. Ninguno de ellos le reportó mayor reconocimiento del que ya tenía como guitarrista de sesión.
Su momento de éxito, ventas y popularidad, llegaria años despues con una bomba para la pista de baile: "You got the floor" grabada en 1981 para el sello Inculcation y altamente recomendable también, pero en una linea muy diferente a este "I can´t believe my eyes"... ¡ espero que os guste!

Melton Brothers Band-Livin in the city-Mdm comunications LP

La "Melton Brothers Band" se formo en 1972 y la forman, aun siguen en activo, los hermanos gemelos Dale Melton, pianista de la banda y Dennis Melton bajista. El resto del grupo son Tyrone Wilson a la batería y Afie Moss en la voz y la percusión. "Livin in the city" es un ejemplo de la cantidad de discos grabados y autoproducidos de forma independiente en mercados locales de USA, con una distribución escasa, por no decir nula. El disco se grabo durante varias actuaciones del grupo en la zona de Pennsylvania en el verano de 1978 y la única forma de hacerse con una copia era en uno de sus conciertos. Según datos de la propia banda se publicaron 1500 copias. 250 de una primera edición con portada tricolor y 1250 con esta segunda portada duotono. ¿Curioso, no?... disfrutarla

Geoffrey Stoner-Watch out - Ovation Lp

Poco os puedo contar de Geoffrey Stoner, una pena. No tengo datos de su procedencia y la producción discografica que conozco es más bien escasa: un par de 45´s con la Geoffrey Stoner Band en el sello Store y dos Lp editados en el sello Ovation: " Ain't Nothin Freaky" y " Watch Out ! " donde está incluido este "Bend your head low", una delicia que compensa por si solo la compra del Lp y que recuerda a otros artistas mucho más conocidos como Jon Lucien o Terry Callier. El resto del disco incluye temas propios y un buen numero de versiones escogidas de repertorios afines a los gustos de las comunidades "hippies" de la costa oeste americana. Añadir tan solo otro dato destacable, la elaborada producción tanto del tema que os muestro, nueve músicos intervienen en ella , como del resto del disco y que se ve reforzada por el modo en el que técnicamente fue grabado utilizando el sistema Quadraphonico, para ser reproducido en cuatro altavoces, en lugar del comúnmente usado sistema Estereo.
